# Reflection

Card 1: State the 2 laws of reflection

## Laws of Reflection

1. The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
2. The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane.
Card 2: What is meant by a real image?

## Real Image

A real image is the image that can form on a screen.

Card 3: Define virtual image.

## Virtual Image

A virtual image is the image that cannot form on a screen.

Card 4: State the characteristic of the image formed by a plane mirror.

## Characteristic of the Image Form by a Plane Mirror

1. Virtual
2. Upright
3. Same size
4. Laterally inverted
5. Image distance = object distance
Card 5: Curve Mirror - Technical Terms

## Curve Mirror

Centre of curvature, C The geometric centre of a hollow sphere of which the concave or convex mirror is a part. Pole of mirror, P The centre point on the curved mirror. Radius of curvature, r Distance between the pole, P and the centre of curvature, C. Principal focus, F A point through which all rays traveling parallel to the principal axis converge to or appear to diverge from after reflection by the mirror. Focal length, f The distance between the principal focus, F and the pole of the curved mirror, P. Aperture of mirror The portion of the surface of the mirror that reflects light. Object distance, u Distance of object from the pole of the mirror, P. Image distance, v Distance of image from the pole of the mirror, Principal axis A line which passes through the centre of curvature, C and the pole of a curved mirror, P.

Card 6: Rules in drawing ray diagram 1

## Rules in Drawing Ray Diagram 1

Concave Mirror Convex Mirror The ray of light through C. This is reflected back through C. A ray towards C is reflected back along its own path.
Card 7: Rules in Drawing Ray Diagram 2

## Rules in Drawing Ray Diagram 2

Concave Mirror Convex Mirror The ray of light parallel to the principal axis. This is reflected through F. A ray parallel to the principal axis is reflected as if it came from F.
